Lake Murray Fishing Report July 19, 2008
Our weekly fishing reports are provided by: http://www.scfishingreport.com!
Lake Murray is still very full at 357, and main lake water temperatures are around 82.
Lake Murray Fishing for Striped Bass: Very good. Fish in 40 to 100 feet around open water humps or down by the towers. Best fishing is coming early and late, or at night. At night fish around the towers in 30 to 60 feet. Lots of small fish are being caught, but good ones too. Now is the time to experiment with lead core lines, downriggers, or fish down rods.
Lake Murray Fishing for Largemouth Bass: Fair. Fish topwater lures early and late, and during the day fish Carolina rigs or jigs around submerged rocks in 6 to 18 feet of water. Some of the best fishing is coming at night; target lighted docks using oversized dark plastic worms.
Lake Murray Fishing for Crappie: Poor. No one seems to be finding the crappie right now, except a few guides and other anglers who have favorite deep brushpiles.
Lake Murray Fishing for Shellcracker: Excellent. Fish in 4 to 8 feet of water around points and shallow humps with baby nightcrawlers and red worms.
Catfish: Excellent. Fish cut bait and nightcrawlers in 3 to 20 feet. This weekend Lake World will have their catfish tournament.
Lake Murray Fishing Report July 13, 2008
Striped Bass:Good. Striper fishing is definitely in a summer pattern, and the fish are deep. The lower lake area is most productive. Fish in depths of 55 to 65 feet. Most of the catch is coming with down rods baited with live herring, although some fishermen are being just as productive suspending cut herring at the depth they mark the fish in the same areas. Deep humps and the towers are both productive, and lower lake creeks are also productive. When not anchored, be sure to keep a free line out as many larger fish are coming this way. Night fishing is become more productive, fishing with downriggers and lead core lines in 25 to 35 feet of water.
Largemouth Bass: Tough. Early in the day fish topwaters like pencil poppers, Zara Spooks, Sammys, and flukes. Later in the day switch to Carolina or Texas rigging with larger worms in the 8 inch range (the finesse bite has declined) off points. Productive colors have been June bug and green pumpkin red. A surprising number of bass remain shallow, although the recent heat wave may move them very deep.
Crappie: Poor. No one seems to be finding the crappie right now, except a few guides and other anglers who have favorite deep brushpiles.
Shellcracker and bream: Good. Shellcracker have generally finished spawning and moved out to 8 to 12 feet of water. They can be caught on crickets or worms. Fish for bream a bit shallower.
Catfish:Good. Cut herring and nightcrawlers fished on the bottom are producing over most any area of the lake from the campground down to the dam.
