Columbia golf was in full swing as Charwood Country Club and Rock Lucas hosted the 2008 Irmo Chapin Winter Youth Golf Tour’s season ending tournament and awards banquet. Close to 200 South Carolina golf players and parents were on hand to participate. The Chapin Optimist Club sponsored the cook-out for the sixteenth straight year. This year’s Chapin Optimist Volunteer team included Russell and Pat Martin, Pam Martin, Joe and Randa Agnew, Tim and Deborah Van Newhouse, Tommy Suddeth and our very own Chase Butler!

Participation is the tour’s top honor and all of these players were loyal and achieved perfect attendance! Jalen & Jensen Castle, Zack Heustess, Wesley & Will Thomas Sheffield, Thomas Burke, Evan Macfie, Ryan McCarthy, Devin McGillan, Grayson Webb, Kelsey Badmaev, Libby Crawford, Breanna & Marissa Lindler, Wick Andrews, Jake Berger, Ajeet Badesha, Excellence Carlos, Zack Giddens, Sam Jackson III, Brooks Miley, Dean Pratt, Luke Reeves, Travis Cashion ,Chase Durham, Dalton Olawsky, Josh Rogers and Collin Witiak. Columbia golf has never been better!

Stacey Badmaev won the caddie award, while Erik Doerring was the “Garnell McDonald Golf Coach of the Year”.

Columbia golf players Jalen Castle, Zack Heustess, Morgan Gobbi, Grayson Webb, Emily Davis, Austin Bowers, Michael Day and Brandon Truesdale were all winners of the George Elfering Sportsmanship Awards for their respective divisions.

There were two Low Stroke Awards with one going to Sam Jackson III and the other to Travis Cashion. The Player of the Year Runner-Up awards went to South Carolina golf players Luke Reeves and Brandon Truesdale, while the Columbia golf Player of the Year awards were earned by Sam Jackson III and Travis Cashion.

The final South Carolina golf awards presented were two scholarships of $500, each given by the Midlands Junior Golf Association. The Lou Miller Chairman Award went to Brandon Truesdale, a senior from Winnsboro. The Friends of Junior Golf Awards in honor of Barbara Bryan went to Chase Durham, a senior from Chapin.
