George E. Bryan, III

Columbia golf player Andy Faris, a retired Delta pilot, led Marty Patton, Bill Landrum and myself on a golf trip to Malinalco, Mexico, recently. The Club de Golf Malinalco is a fantastic resort just outside of Mexico City. The layout is challenging and the course is immaculately maintained. The weather in late February is a perfect 70-75° and sunny during the day, dipping into the low 50’s or so when the sun goes down.

Maybe the best part about this trip is that there is nothing but golf, no distractions and the four of us had this course to ourselves four out of six of the days!  Malinalco is a weekend getaway for Mexico City’s wealthy, plus it was “out of season”, so this made for truly a great combination for us!

There was one minor glitch on my part; I allowed them their full handicaps early in the week and got hammered by all three. Then, after adjustments, they played exceptional so I still got hammered later in the week. These three guys all had incredible stretches of fabulous golf each round each day that included not just pars, but birdies and eagles!

Speaking of performance, Kyle Kimrey, a student at the University of South Carolina and the Irmo High School wrestling coach had a hole-in-one on #14 at Charleston National!

“I hit a hard wedge that landed long and right then spun back into the cup. It was really a solid shot, and I hit it exactly the way I wanted to,” explained an excited physical education major.

Columbia golf institution, the Charwood Country Club hosted the Lexington County Tee off which fielded 16 South Carolina golf teams. Dutch Fork was the team champion, while Wesley Bryan (Dutch Fork) earned individual medalist honors defeating Luke McClellan (Airport) in a play-off. Both Columbia golf players scored two under par 70 in regulation play. Chuck Moore (Dutch Fork) and Matt Nesmith (North Augusta) finished tied for third.
